Short Description:
Extra characters are announced when selecting by word in Notepad

Problem:
When selecting or unselecting by word in Notepad, JAWS announces the first letter of the word following the selection.

Solution:
One way to solve this problem is to uninstall supplemental languages, such as Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Hebrew, Arabic etc.

1. Navigate to the Control Panel.

2. Select Regional and Language Options, Languages Tab.

3. Uncheck the following two check boxes:

- Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)

- Install files for East Asian languages.

4. Restart your computer when prompted.

If you need support for supplemental languages, and you run JAWS 6.10 or later, you can enable Enhanced Edit Support in your JAWS settings for Notepad.

Note: Enabling Enhanced Edit Support can impact JAWS performance in other areas, as referenced in the following TSN:

General lack of expected functionality with braille, Outlook, highlighting, and so on, after enabling Enhanced Edit Mode.

1. From within Notepad, press JAWS Key+6 to bring up JAWS Configuration Manager.

2. Select Set Options Menu, and then Text Processing.

3. Press ALT+R to check the Enhanced Edit Support checkbox.

4. Press the OK button and save (CTRL+S) the changes to your configuration file.

5. Close Configuration Manager.

Short Description:
Windows support for right-to-left languages may disrupt navigation in Notepad.

Problem:
If you have installed Windows support for complex script and right-to-left languages, pressing RIGHT CTRL+ RIGHT SHIFT+RIGHT or LEFT ARROW with JAWS running will change the reading order rather than selecting the next or prior word.

Solution:
If you do not require the right-to-left language support, you should remove this optional Windows feature to resolve the issue. In Control Panel, choose Regional and Language Options, switch to the Languages tab, and clear the Install Files for Complex Script and Right-to-Left Languages (Including Thai) check box. Then, press OK and restart your computer.
If you do require the special language support options in Windows, and you have inadvertently switched the reading order in Notepad, you can press LEFT SHIFT+LEFT CTRL+LEFT ARROW to return to normal reading order.
To work around the problem in the future, you should always use the LEFT CTRL and LEFT SHIFT keys in your word selection commands.
