Cannot append to clipboard in Excel. 9/23/2009

Bulletin Type: TSN
Bulletin Number: 48090
Date Posted: 9/23/2009
Product Name: JAWS

Version: 11.0 plus

Category: Excel

Short Description:
Cannot append to clipboard in Excel.

Problem:
When you attempt to Copy to clipboard (CTRL+C), then Append to clipboard (WINDOWS Key+C), an Excel application crash may occur. It is also possible that this sequence can result in a JAWS application crash.

Solution:
Non-standard functionality within the Excel clipboard prohibits use of the Append to Clipboard feature in Excel. Starting with JAWS 11, if you attempt to Copy then Append to clipboard, JAWS will indicate that this feature is not available in Excel. WINDOWS Key+C can still be used in Microsoft Word and other applications.

Moving by ARROW keys to a merged cell in Excel is not always accurate.   10/19/2010

Bulletin Type: TSN
Bulletin Number: 57462
Date Posted: 10/19/2010
Product Name: JAWS

Version: 11.0 plus
Category: Excel

Short Description:
Moving by ARROW keys to a merged cell in Excel is not always accurate.

Problem:
When moving to a merged cell, the end location is not always accurate. The problem only occurs when you have pressed RIGHT or LEFT ARROW specifically on a merged cell and then bring up a list of data cells and move specifically to the item in the list closest to the merged cell. If you move anywhere else, other than close to the merged cell, this problem does not happen. This affects all versions of Excel.

An example scenario is as follows:

You have a merged cell that spans from Cells A1 through N2. You have other cells that are not merged in columns within the range of the merge cell range but below it, for example in cells B4, C4, etc.

You want to bring up the list of visible cells with data so that you don't have to hunt around the spreadsheet trying to find out which cells have data in them.

The only time you will have a problem in this situation:

You are in A1, the first cell in the merged cell range. JAWS tells you this is a merged cell.

You RIGHT ARROW and JAWS says you are now in N1 because that is the end of the merged cell range.

You LEFT ARROW again to get back to A1.

You bring up the list of visible cells with data and you choose B4, the first non-merged cell in the list by pressing ENTER. JAWS does place you there, but if you move right, JAWS moves you over to cell N1, the last cell in the merged cell range.

Solution:
Simply move left or down then up and right again. If following the above example scenario, simply move left from B4 and then right again. This repositions the cursor properly so that you are no longer within the merged cell range.

How do I setup the Microsoft Office 2010 Home/Student Trial Edition for optimal use with JAWS?   10/18/2010

Bulletin Type: FAQ

Product Name: JAWS

Category: Office

Question:
How do I setup the Microsoft Office 2010 Home/Student Trial Edition for optimal use with JAWS?

Answer:
For optimal results, be sure to download the full stand-along version of the Microsoft Office 2010 Home/Student Trial Edition. Note: A Click-to-Run version of the same trial does not offer support for use with JAWS, or MAGic, as it runs in a virtual environment.

Additional information:
When you download the Microsoft Office 2010 Home/Student Trial Edition, you are initially given the option to install a "Click-to-Run" version. This version downloads a small installer which sets up a virtual environment. The actual Office application then runs on a remote machine from a Microsoft server. Because of the virtual environment, this Click-to-Run version of the Home/Student Trial Edition does not support use with JAWS and MAGic.

How do I know for sure I am running the Click-to-Run trial version?
While running any application within the trial version of Microsoft Office 2010 suite, press JAWSKey+Q or MAGicKey+Q for the ScriptFileName function. If you hear the script reported as "default" or "Office 2007" (e.g. Excel or Word 2007), then this is an indicator you are running Click-to-Run, as Office is not reporting to JAWS or MAGic the correct executable name.
Switch from Office Click-to-Run to MSI-based Office
If you already have the Click-to-Run version of the trial, you can successfully use JAWS and MAGic after uninstalling this Click-to-Run version of Microsoft Office 2010 Home/Student Edition, and instead download and install the full stand-alone version of the trial edition. As per Microsoft's support information, you can make this change as follows:

Save all work, and then close all programs.

In Control Panel, open Programs and Features to see a list of installed programs.

Click Microsoft Office Click-To-Run 2010, and then click Uninstall.

To remove Microsoft Office Click-to-Run, click Yes.

Go to the Microsoft Office alternative fulfillment page.

Click My account.

Click Download, and then click Advanced options.

Follow the instructions.

To install the MSI-based Microsoft Office edition, run SingleImage.exe.

When prompted, type your Product Key to continue.
NOTE: The license is the same. You do not need a new Product Key. If you have any questions, contact Microsoft Support.

What can I do if Word reports a low memory or "This Object is Corrupt" warning when I try to view an embedded PowerPoint slide? 12/30/2009

Question:
What can I do if Word reports a low memory or "This Object is Corrupt" warning when I try to view an embedded PowerPoint slide?

Answer:
How you embed a PowerPoint slide into a Word 2003 or Word 2007 document will affect how successful you are when trying to view and manipulate that slide.

The correct method of embedding a slide in Word is to select Insert, then Object. The resulting menu item will be "Slide Object" which will have submenu
items to Edit, Open, or Convert the slide.
It is not advisable to attempt to embed the slide from PowerPoint into Word using COPY and PASTE functions. After doing so, when you right click on the slide in Word, the context menu will have a menu item called "Object." This is a generic object type and cannot be edited. If you select "Object" you will see the error message "This object is corrupt or no longer available." You may also experience a low-memory error attempting to view or edit the slide.
This issue is not JAWS specific and variants of the behavior will be observed with and without JAWS running.

How do I work with the auto-complete in the File Open dialog for Word 2007 in Vista vs. XP? 4/9/2008

Bulletin Type: FAQ

Date Posted: 4/9/2008

Product Name: JAWS

Version: 9.0 plus

Category: Word

Question:

How do I work with the auto-complete in the File Open dialog for Word 2007 in Vista vs. XP?

Answer:

The "Open file" dialog in Microsoft Word 2007 behaves differently depending on whether you are using Windows XP or Windows Vista. When using Windows XP, typing the first two characters in the "Open File" dialog results in JAWS speaking the file names that begins with those letters as additional characters are typed. This is referred to as "Auto-complete". When performing the same task in Windows Vista, Auto-complete behaves differently: to hear the file name after typing in two or more characters, press ALT+DOWN ARROW. This drops down the list of filenames that begin with the characters just typed.

What if JAWS appears lost on the ribbon when duplicating a slide in PowerPoint

Bulletin Type: FAQ
Bulletin Number: 37493
Date Posted: 9/3/2008
Product Name: JAWS

Version: 9.0 plus
Category: PowerPoint

Question:

What if JAWS appears lost on the ribbon when duplicating a slide in PowerPoint 2007?

Answer:
While working in PowerPoint 2007, you may want to duplicate an existing slide. You can do this by placing focus on the slide you want to duplicate, then pressing ALT+H followed by I and finally D. The slide will be duplicated. But if you press JAWS Key+UP ARROW to read the current line, JAWS announces "home tab." Focus is stuck on the home ribbon instead of going to the duplicated slide.

This is specific to Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 and not a JAWS bug. If affected and you find yourself stuck in the HOME ribbon after duplicating a slide, press ESC. Focus will go to the duplicated slide.

When the security dialog box comes up in Access 2007, why does focus go directly to the OK button instead of the bank of radio buttons? 9/3/2008

Bulletin Type: FAQ
Bulletin Number: 45447
Date Posted: 9/3/2008
Product Name: JAWS
Version: 10.0

Category: Access

Question:

When the security dialog box comes up in Access 2007, why does focus go directly to the OK button instead of the bank of radio buttons?

Answer:

In Microsoft Access 2007, if you open a database with unknown content, you will be presented with a security dialog box where you can choose to enable or block the unknown content. When this dialog box opens, focus will be on the OK button instead of the bank of radio buttons. This is not a JAWS bug as Microsoft Access is placing the focus on the OK button. JAWS is transparent to the application you are using and does not modify the default behavior of the application. Thus, if Microsoft Access is placing the focus on the ok button by default, JAWS will not modify this behavior.

The solution to this is to TAB to the bank of radio buttons manually and read them or change the default for this control.

Why can't I cursor over my comments, endnotes, or footnotes in Word if I have the option to detect them turned on? 9/3/2008

Bulletin Type: FAQ
Bulletin Number: 36922
Date Posted: 9/3/2008
Product Name: JAWS

Version: 9.0 plus
Category: Word

Question:
Why can't I cursor over my comments, endnotes, or footnotes in Word if I have the option to detect them turned on?

Answer:
There is an option in JAWS to detect Comments, footnotes, and endnotes. This option is on by default. You can find this option by pressing INSERT+V to open the Adjust JAWS Options dialog box and then type letter 'C' until you land on the Comments, footnotes, and endnotes detection option. You may wonder why you cannot cursor over your comments, footnotes, and endnotes even though this option is turned on.

When this option is turned on, the comments, footnotes, and endnotes are detected when you navigate by line. If you navigate by character or word you do not hear the actual text of the comment, footnote or endnote because these are visually in a different location in the document. If you navigate by character, you will hear the indicator, but not the actual text from the comment, footnote, or endnote. You will see this text in Braille if you have a Braille display attached.

Why does JAWS announce that there are no titles when selecting a region with row and column titles set? 9/3/2008

Bulletin Type: FAQ
Bulletin Number: 45264
Date Posted: 9/3/2008
Product Name: JAWS
Version: 10.0

Category: Excel

Question:
Why does JAWS announce that there are no titles when selecting a region with row and column titles set?

Answer:
In Microsoft Excel, you can use the keystroke CTRL+SHIFT+NumRow 8 to select a region. When this command is issued, all of the contiguous cells containing
data for the region where the insertion point is located are selected. This means that wherever the focus happens to be in the spreadsheet is considered a region and any cells containing data that are contiguous to that cell are selected, beginning at the top left boundary and selecting to the bottom right of the boundary. If you have set row and/or column titles for the region that has just been selected, you might expect JAWS to announce the titles for this region. JAWS reads titles, if present, when focus is in the cell below or to the right of the title. Because the selection process selects the whole region, including the title, JAWS states there are no titles in the region.

Why does JAWS report a different color when viewing a presentation in PowerPoint, than when creating the presentation? 7/1/2008

Bulletin Type: FAQ
Bulletin Number: 35833
Date Posted: 7/1/2008
Product Name: JAWS

Version: 9.0
Category: PowerPoint

Question:
Why does JAWS report a different color when viewing a presentation in PowerPoint, than when creating the presentation?

Answer:
While creating a slideshow in PowerPoint, it is possible to modify the color of text. The keystroke INSERT+5 is used by JAWS to announce the color of the text at the cursor's location.

JAWS identifies the color selected while creating the slide show differently from when running that same slide show. This is because when a slide show is run, JAWS presents the slide show using the virtual viewer. When the virtual viewer is being navigated, the colors it presents are not related to those actually in a document. Therefore, it is not useful to ask JAWS to identify the color of text when in the virtual viewer. Rather, it is more practical to ask JAWS to identify the color of text when creating or reviewing the text itself.

Why does navigating by word skip the second embedded object in a Microsoft Word document? 7/1/2008

Bulletin Type: FAQ
Bulletin Number: 37234
Date Posted: 7/1/2008
Product Name: JAWS

Version: 9.0 plus
Category: Word

Question:
Why does navigating by word skip the second embedded object in a Microsoft Word document?

Answer:
This occurs if two or more embedded objects are inserted into a Microsoft Word 2003/2007 document without a TAB between each object. When navigating by word (CTRL+RIGHT ARROW or CTRL+LEFT ARROW), JAWS will state "blank" and skip over the second embedded object. You can work around this issue in one of two ways:

• First, use navigate by character (RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW) instead of navigate by word when two or more embedded objects appear in a document.
• Second, if creating a Microsoft Word document with two or more embedded objects, it is recommended to add at least one TAB to separate each of the embedded objects.

5. Navigera texten i textrutan.

1. I Word, tryck INSERT+V för JAWS Snabbinställningar.

2. Leta upp inställningen Upptäck sidhuvud och sidfot under läsinställningar och tryck Mellanslag för att slå av den här funktionen före du skriver ut.
